Ken Roczen claims the WSX crown in Australian finale

Honda Genuine Fire Power Honda Racing just raced to a superb night of racing in Melbourne, Australia. The Marvel Stadium that seats up to 53,359 spectators hosted the final round of the 2022 FIM World Supercross Championship, an event that will go down in history and be referenced for years to come.

Ken Roczen was the clear favourite to claim the WSX title in Melbourne, but anything can happen in a series as jam packed as the FIM World Supercross Championship. Roczen won his heat and then posted the fastest time in the ‘Super Pole’ spectacle, which gave him pole position for the finals. Roczen was dominant in the first final – he led every lap en route to the victory.

It seemed that Roczen was set for similar success in the penultimate race, as he was operating on top form and moved into the early lead. There was a freak issue that forced him to retire prematurely, unfortunately, and thus all of the focus was placed on the final race of the night. With the pressure at an all-time high, ’94’ did more than enough in that and raced over the line in second place to win the 2022 FIM World Supercross Championship! With 1-15-2 scores, he took second overall at the Grand Prix of Australia.

Dean Wilson joined his teammate in the SX1 class and showed podium potential, despite a fall in the timed sessions. ’15’ was fifth in the first final in a rather consistent showing and then faced adversity in the second stint, as he was involved in a multi-rider fall and had to turn his attention to the last encounter. Saving the best for last, he used the power within his CRF450R to take a brilliant start and eventually hit the checkered flag in fourth. 5-16-4 scores left him eighth in the overall classification. Wilson was ranked in thirteenth in the final championship standings.

Competing in the SX2 division aboard his CRF250R, Max Anstie was phenomenal in Melbourne. ’99’ had his sights set on the championship and got his title bid off to an incredible start with a start-to-finish win in the first final. Anstie claimed third and second in the two finals that followed. It was his showing in the last race that was most impressive – he was all over the leader with a couple of corners to go and came up short by just six tenths! 1-3-2 rankings helped him clinch second in the Grand Prix of Australia classification and final championship standings.

Wilson Todd secured sixth overall in the MX2 division, but had the potential to stand on the overall podium. Todd was superb en route to sixth in the first final – he was full of confidence after having the fourth fastest time. Unfortunately, that momentum came screeching to a halt when he got caught in a fall in turn one of the second final. ’20’ recovered to thirteenth and then followed that up with a seventh in the final race of the night. Todd showed a lot of speed in the 2022 FIM World Supercross Championship and was eventually ranked in seventh in the final championship standings.

Honda also claimed the manufactures title in the SX2 and WSX classes.

Dean Wilson: “It was good to get some solid results on the board on my CRF450R. I could have had a much better overall result, if it was not for the second final, but I am happy with the direction that we are heading in!”

Max Anstie: “I am going in the right direction! The 2022 FIM World Supercross Championship has been great for us and I cannot wait to see what next year brings. We will be back and going for gold, that is for sure.”

Wilson Todd: “It has been a good night and a good weekend! I am definitely making progress every single time that I hit the track on my CRF250R. The results do not reflect the level that we are at currently, but we are going to keep pushing.”
